What is a CBCT scan x-ray?
CBCT stands for cone beam computer tomography system. The beam rotates around you giving the dental professional a three-dimensional image (3-D) of the patient anatomy such as teeth and oral facial maxillofacial region.
What is a CBCT scan/ Imaging used for?
Dental CBCT images have various clinical uses. The scans are often used for implant treatment and planning, visualization of abnormal teeth, evaluation of the jaw, face and dental trauma. The CBCT will also help with Root canal diagnosis and surgical planning for impacted teeth.
Benefits and Risks:
Dental x-ray and CBCT imaging provides a non-invasive way of answering clinical questions. CBCT images give the dentist three-dimensional (3-D) images where as a standard dental x-ray is two-dimensional (2-D). The 3-D image generates up to 200 high resolution 2-D images that are digitally combined to form 3-D images. These images provide valuable information about patient’s oral craniofacial teeth. These scans provide the dentist with valuable information as well as evaluation of other dental concerns and conditions.
We are exposed to natural radiation in the environment daily, CBCT images for dental use are a lower level of radiation compared to the previous traditional x-rays taken years ago. A digital image is captured electronically, there is no need to develop the x-ray, therefore eliminating the disposal of harmful waste and chemical in the environment. Dentist still take precautions to limit patient exposure to radiation by only taking x-rays / CBCT images when necessary for your dental treatment and diagnosis.
